Night Walkers
Night Walkers is an animation inspired by the stories of vampires, female demons, and specifically Estries from Jewish culture. The Estrie is described as beautiful and blood-thirsty and it is said that in order to fly, Estries must loosen their hair. This presents an interesting intersection between beauty and power, considering the tradition of shaving and/or covering one’s hair in Orthodox Judaism. Such crossroads are inherent in vampiric stories. They are the original femme fatales – sexualized objects of desire and danger which are imbued with male anxieties concerning feminine independence, sexuality, and motherhood. Where in our collective consciousness does the she-devil live? Can she embody freedom beyond ostracism?
